How to Read an Edible Oil Label

Labels carry more information than the front-of-pack claims. Here is where to look.
Start with the ingredient list
A single-ingredient oil should say exactly that. Any additional ingredient — an antioxidant, a blend, an added flavour — must be listed.
Blended oils are legal and clearly labelled; read the list if you want a single-seed oil.
Extraction and processing wording
Look for how the oil was made: cold-pressed, expeller-pressed, refined, or a combination. This is more informative than adjectives like 'pure' or 'premium'.
Dates, batch and contact details
Check the packing date, best-before date, batch number, net quantity and a working contact for the manufacturer. Traceability is part of trust.
Frequently Asked Questions
